Lunarfurniture.com – Dari begitu banyak bahan furniture yang berkembang di masyarakat, kita akan melihat adanya kecenderungan bahwa furniture yang terbuat dari bahan alam seperti kayu telah menjadi bahan yang paling banyak digunakan. Disamping terkenal akan kekuatannya, bahan kayu sendiri dapat dipakai sebagai bahan utama untuk beberapa jenis furniture seperti; kursi, meja, dipan, lemari, dan beberapa bahan lainnya. Hal ini tentu saja memunculkan kekhawatiran konsumsi kayu yang berlebihan dari alam. Jika permintaan furniture dari bahan kayu terus meningkat, tentu pohon-pohon yang ada di alam akan semakin cepat habis.
Dengan adanya masalah ini, banyak pihak yang berusaha untuk mencari bahan pengganti kayu yang lebih ramah lingkungan sekaligus mencegah adanya konsumsi kayu yang berlebihan. Belakangan, seorang lulusan University of Edinburgh bernama Peter Trimble menemukan satu buah materi yang dipercaya dapat menggantikan bahan kayu sebagai furniture di masa depan. Bahan tersebut terbuat dari urine, Iya! Anda benar! Urine manusia.
Proyek thesis yang dikerjakan oleh Trimble diberi nama Dupe, dan mempelajari prosedur pengecoran induksi mikrobiologi, dimana bakteri yang digunakan adalah bacillus pasterurii. Yang menjadi unik adalah, mikroba ini ternyata dapat membuat berbagai material. Bakteri ini memiliki kemampuan mengendapkan kalsit sekaligus membuat pasir menjadi padat jika diberi sejenis kalsium dan urea. Urea ini sendiri adalah bahan utama yang dapat ditemukan dalam urine manusia yang berisi nitrogen. Pemadatan bahan seperti butiran pasir inilah yang nantinya dapat dikembangkan untuk membuat furniture.
Bahan material hasil penelitian ini dipercaya tidak menghasilkan polutan dan gas rumah kaca. Material ini juga diyakini memiliki kekuatan yang relatif setara dengan beton. Dengan adanya penemuan ini, maka masa depan furniture di dunia akan semakin cerah tanpa harus mengeksplorasi dan merusak alam.

Despite of those factors, wooden material can be shaped into several furniture types such as; table, chair, bed, cupboard, etc. The popularity of wooden material worries so many people about over exploiting natural wooden tree in the world since the demand of the wooden furniture increases year by year.
As the solution to keep the tree on the earth, so many people and expert try to find the replacement material which is eco friendly and can reduce the wooden over consumption. A bachelor of University of Edinburgh, Peter Trimble, invented a kind of material which is believed that it can replace the wood as the furniture material in the future, the shocking thing is, the material is made by urine, yes, I repeat it, urine!
Trimble made a thesis named Dupe and learned about a procedure of microbiology induction casting, where the bacteria used in the thesis is bacillus pasterurii. The unique thing is that, this bacterium can build any material. It has ability to precipitate the calcite and compact the sands if it is given any calcium and urea. The urea is the main material found in human urine alongside of nitrogen. The compacting process of the sands is the invention which might be used as the alternative material for the future furniture.
The alternative material found in this thesis is believed that it won’t produce any pollutant or glasshouse gas effect. The material has similar characteristic and strength just like the concrete. The invented material helps the effort of saving more of the nature resources in the future.
